Do It

We have talked about impacts to your job search timeframe, but with the exception of setting targets the other factors are beyond your control.

So, what factors are within your control that you can work on, or at least understand to shorten your job search timeframe.  Listed below are some examples:

Network Contacts

  • Ensure you have a network of contacts that can provide you with advice, introduce you to key people, or even advise when and where potential openings could becoming available
  • Don’t have any, get out there and start putting yourself forward in the right areas or industries – if nothing else it will improve your knowledge

Attitude, self-confidence, and personality style

  • It is important that you are optimistic, confident and are putting yourself out there to take advantage of any opportunities that present themselves
  • Can-do attitude is infectious and attractive to employers

Support by family and friends

  • Don’t be afraid to ask for support and encouragement from family and friends
  • Be clear on your intent and talk to those who are important to you for support – be clear on how they can support you
  • Don’t underestimate the rollercoaster you are about to get on, the more support you have the better

Effort and Commitment Invested

  • Full time workers should spend an average of 1-2 hours per week job searching
  • Unemployed workers should spend an average of 4-6 hours per week job searching
  • Research, research, research the industry, job, career and environment you are searching for
  • Be prepared prior to any interviews
  • Update resume and supporting documents, or examples of work

Financial Reserves

  • Know how much you need to sustain you through the job search process and be prepared to budget
  • If considering a drop in salary, ensure you understand your bottom line in terms of remuneration
  • Don’t be afraid to answer the question “what is your expectation on salary” – you can be prepared by using links previously provided to understand what the expected market are paying to guide you
